Press Release: SanDisk to Supply TransFlash Memory Cards for Kyocera Wireless KX5 Music Phone; Tiny, Removable Storage Card Used To Store Music, Photos and Video Clips

July 12, 2005--SanDisk(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today announced that Kyocera Wireless, a leading global manufacturer of CDMA wireless phones and devices, will bundle a SanDisk TransFlash(TM) memory card with the new Kyocera Slider Remix(TM) KX5 mobile phone, a full-featured handset that incorporates a high-resolution digital camera and music playback functions as well as other digital entertainment features.

The advanced KX5 features a 2-inch TFT color display, a music player with three-dimensional stereo sound, video capture capabilities, and a digital camera with 1.3-megapixel resolution. The phone will be packaged and sold(1) with a SanDisk TransFlash card. The card slot in the handset can also accommodate high-capacity TransFlash cards that SanDisk offers at retail.
The SD Card Association (SDA), an industry-standards setting organization for the SD card and its applications, recently adopted TransFlash as the new storage card format for handsets and renamed it the "microSD" card. microSD cards are fully compatible with TransFlash cards and will be fully supported by Kyocera and other handset manufacturers.
"We are pleased that Kyocera has selected the SanDisk TransFlash card for the KX5," said Wes Brewer, vice president of retail products at SanDisk. "As more phones offer mobile entertainment and multimedia features, removable flash memory is an ideal way for consumers to store and transfer their information, digital images and compressed music files. With its unique combination of small size and high capacity, TransFlash cards have opened the way for sleek, highly functional, multimedia phones like the KX5."
"An increasing number of consumers not only want stylish wireless handsets, but they also want advanced features such as music players on their phones that will match their busy and individualized lifestyles," said Lee Ittner, vice president of global sales and marketing at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "By utilizing the TransFlash card slot on the Kyocera Slider Remix, consumers gain the flexibility of removable storage so they can literally change hundreds of songs on the go in one quick and easy step."
Key features of the Kyocera KX5 include:
-- Digital music player with support for both MP3 and AAC formats
-- 1.3 megapixel camera with built-in flash and 5x digital zoom
-- Up to 15 seconds of video capture
-- Large 176 x 220 TFT, 262K-color display.
SanDisk was involved in integrating the TransFlash slot into the phone and provided a SanDisk Software Development Tool Kit to Kyocera Wireless to access the card and support multimedia files. The integration also optimizes performance and low power consumption for multimedia data.
SanDisk TransFlash cards can be used with an included adapter that allows them to be used in any of the existing devices with SD card slots. Offered for sale through retail markets, TransFlash cards are available in capacities up to 256-megabytes and are sold at more than 110,000 retail outlets where SanDisk products are sold worldwide.
SanDisk is the original inventor of flash storage cards and is the world's largest supplier of flash data storage card products using its patented, high-density flash memory and controller technology. SanDisk is headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA and has operations worldwide, with more than half its sales outside the U.S.
