Digital Imagery Casts Doubt on Speeding Tickets in AustraliaThe ease with which digital photographs can be
edited and manipulated, an ease that has drawn many photographers to the medium,
has caused an Australian court to invalidate a speeding ticket that was issued
after a driver was allegedly recorded speeding through a school zone by a speed
tracking digital camera.
The decision by Sydney magistrate Lawrence Lawson
was rendered after the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority was unable to
prove that images attained from speed cameras were not susceptible to doctoring.
The judgment has the potential to invalidate 15 years worth of speeding tickets
issued based on speed camera images in New South
Wales.
