FTC Raps Epson, HP for Strong-Arm TacticsPrices of printer accessories like ink, toner and
ribbons are expected to come down after the Fair Trade Commission on Monday
ordered printer manufacturers Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Epson to stop forcing
retailers to keep prices artificially high.
The FTC only gave a warning to Samsung Electronics,
which it said had not leaned on retailers as heavily as the other
two.
According to the FTC, HP and Epson specified prices
when supplying them to retailers and punish them if they do not stick to the
recommended prices. The FTC expects the order will allow retailers to decide
their own price and as thus benefit consumers by promoting
competition.
