Press Release: Leica Camera AG Honors Brazilian Documentary Photographer
Sebastião Salgado
Leica Camera AG, Solms, has presented a LEICA M7
rangefinder camera made of solid titanium and bearing the special serial number
3,000,000 to Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, Leica to honor his
extensive humanistic work, particularly his large-scale 'Workers' and
'Migration' exhibits. As a documentary photographer, Salgado has captured human
reaction to war, poverty, suppression and the spirit of survival against these
odds. Salgado was awarded the prestigious Leica Oskar-Barnack Award for his
photographic work.
Salgado will donate his prize, the all-titanium
camera, to the Westlicht auction in the Leica shop in Vienna, Austria on
November 27, 2005 with all proceeds going to a trust set up to save the tropical
rainforests. On November 29, 2005, the Leica Gallery in Vienna will stage a
photo exhibition of children's portraits from Sebastião Salgado's
'Migration' project. Details of the auction and the photo exhibition are
available on the Internet at
www.westlicht.com.
The LEICA M7 with the
serial number 3,000,000 is part of a special series designed to commemorate the
50th anniversary of the Leica rangefinder system in the year 2004. It is made of
solid titanium, limited to a quantity of 50 cameras engraved with the years from
1954 to 2004 and is packaged with three
lenses.
For collectors of exclusive
items, Leica is also offering the anniversary set of the titanium LEICA M7
together with the high-speed universal LEICA SUMMILUX-M f/4/50mm ASPH lens. The
titanium cameras in the set also bear the anniversary engraving and have a
special serial number from 3,000,050 to 3,000,550. The exclusive set combines
the tradition of a proven photographic tool - the Leica M camera - with the
