Apple switches to Intel chips


Apple Computer said it is abandoning IBM in favour of chips made by Intel to power its trendy Macintosh machines.

In what analysts say is a major gamble for Apple, chief executive Steve Jobs told an annual conference of software developers here that new Macintosh computers will come with Intel microprocessors "by this time next year."
