Intel Wins Apple's Eye
Apple CEO Steve Jobs today said that Apple will
switch from the PowerPC chip to an Intel x86-based chip in 2006. Jobs made the
announcement in his keynote address at Apple's World Wide Developer Conference
in San Francisco.
Apple has not
traditionally used an Intel-based processor in any of its offerings. The first
Macintosh used Motorola chips (Motorola's semiconductor unit is now called
FreeScale) and have been using the PowerPC chip, developed by IBM and Motorola
since 1991.
